Struggling to get your research funded? Tired of writing alone? Looking for constructive feedback? Frustrated with lack of protected time and resources to be a scholar?

We are building a community of early career scholars and pairing them with esteemed faculty mentors. The Build & Broaden Faculty Learning Community will EMPOWER and AFFIRM research focusing on family processes and intimate relationship formation among underrepresented groups (broadly defined).

This might be the program for you if you:

  • Work in a teaching-intensive institution  OR

  • Work in an institution with few grant-related resources OR

  • Fall in a broadening participation category as defined by NSF.

 “NSF defines broadening participation in terms of individuals from underrepresented groups as well as institutions and geographic areas that do not participate in NSF research programs at rates comparable to others.” (See page iii of https://nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/2022-03/nsf_frameworkforaction_0808.pdf)

In the growing literature on Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs), scholars have highlighted how this group format is useful for bringing scholars together to enrich their learning and awareness, build their tools and strategies for success, engage in constructive dialogue and reflection, and foster a community of practice (Cox, 2001, 2004; Macpherson, 2007).The FLC catalyzes cutting-edge, developmental research using projects focused on underrepresented families at pivotal developmental transitions while considering the familial, financial, and social factors impacting those developmental stages.

The project will:

1. Contribute to stronger, more innovative science by diversifying research and widening the STEM pipeline;

2. Provide researchers with new ways to diversify and sustain collaborations;

3. Build capacity and enhance research productivity in the SBE sciences at MSIs; and

4. Foster partnerships that strengthen career and research trajectories for scholars at MSIs.
